For example, Cash and Accounts Receivable, Net of the Allowance for Doubtful Accounts, typically have a debit balance, and the Accounts Payable account typically has a credit balance. Whenever cash is received, the asset account Cash is debited and another account will need to be credited. Since the service was performed at the same time as the cash was received, the revenue account Service Revenues is credited, thus increasing normal balance of accounts its account balance. Revenues and gains are recorded in accounts such as Sales, Service Revenues, Interest Revenues (or Interest Income), and Gain on Sale of Assets. These accounts normally have credit balances that are increased with a credit entry. So for example there are contra expense accounts such as purchase returns, contra revenue accounts such as sales returns and contra asset accounts such as accumulated depreciation.
This means that the new accounting year starts with no revenue amounts, no expense amounts, and no amount in the drawing account. This may happen when a debit entry is entered on the credit side or when a company is acquired but that transaction is not recorded. Similarly, a credit ticket may be entered into the general ledger when a deposit is made, but it needs an offsetting debit ticket, either at the same time or soon after, to balance the books.
At the bottom of the trial balance report document, the Debit and Credit column totals are presented. According to the rules of double-entry accounting, total debits should equal total credits. Once all balances are transferred to the unadjusted trial balance, we will sum each of the debit and credit columns.

Rerun the trial balance after making adjusting entries and again after making closing entries. In a trial balance, each general ledger account is listed with the account number, account name description, debit amount in the Debit column, and credit amount in the Credit column.
